After placing that many people in the role, we’ve got a good answer. Before we get into that, here are the basics:

What You’ll Need

Here are the five traits that show up again and again in our best traveling merchandiser candidates.

1. You’re a Natural-Born Wanderer

Love meeting new people and seeing new parts of the country? This might be the most important trait on this list. Most projects run several weeks, and then you’re off to another state to do it again somewhere new. If you’ve got some wanderlust in you, this job was basically built for it.

2. You’re a Team Player

You won’t be doing this alone. Our cosmetic merchandising teams run anywhere from 2 to 10 people, and our capital project teams can run from 3 all the way up to 20. Whatever the size, you’ll be working closely with the same people project after project, and that team tends to start feeling like family fast. If you play well with others, that’s a real asset here, not just a nice-to-have.

3. You’re a Fixer

Being handy matters. A lot of our merchandising work involves tools, drills, levels, basic hand tools, and you’ll be expected to bring your own set once you’re hired. If you’ve got experience with installation or assembly, that’s a big plus. Former handymen, carpenters, and installers tend to do well here, especially if you like starting a project and seeing it through to the finish line. There’s a real sense of satisfaction in walking into an empty display space on day one and walking out of a finished one a few weeks later.

4. You’re a Self-Starter

If you tend to see what needs doing and just do it, without someone telling you every step, you’ll fit right in. We need reps who can spot a problem, think it through, and act on it without waiting around for instructions. That kind of initiative makes you genuinely valuable to your team, not just easy to manage.

5. You’re a Good Communicator

You’ll be in regular contact with your District Coordinator, District Manager, and Team Lead, so being responsive to calls and emails matters. Basic courtesy goes a long way too, if something’s going to make you late or miss a day, give your manager a heads-up. You’ll also need to report in daily after your shift, from your phone or a computer, whichever’s easier. We can’t get you paid without that report, so staying on top of it is part of the job, not an afterthought.
